When I trained for desert rats Kokopelli I started heat training by doing short loops with my car as an aid station. As I became better heat adapted I lengthened the loops. This progression helped me feel safe and less anxious while training in over 100 degree temps. Shit goes wrong fast out there.

Second all of that, Sarah. I did the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim a few months ago. We ran out of water during the hottest part, so we had to muscle out a long 5 miles before the next rest stop. I regulate my breathing, first. Then, I focus on each breath, which focuses my mind. I become hyper aware of each thought, ensuring that it's positive or helpful. The last thing I want in that situation is to panic or start focusing on thing I can't control.

Thanks! I did the R2R2R in May 2023 and even in May it got very hot. Thank goodness for lemonade at Phantom Ranch!

As a desert runner, I am very aware of the importance of heat acclimation! But that doesn’t mean I’m immune to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. I’ve definitely experienced some scary side effects of the heat & sun in the past few years so now I’m extra cautious and bring plenty of water + electrolytes on all runs in the hot months, no matter the distance! I am a very salty sweater so generally I have to use higher sodium (1000 mg) products to maintain my electrolyte levels.

Thank you for speaking up about National Monuments! I just traveled through the area where you’ll be running the Grand to Grand en route to my race last weekend in the Tushars of southern Utah and I’m hopeful that these beautiful places will remain protected for decades to come.

Thanks for reading, and congrats on doing Tushars -- I've heard how beautiful and tough it is.
