If there is something "good" that can be garnered from the current shit, rocks and glass being thrown about by the current administration, it's THIS. I think the idea of in person, making connection is being recognized as the thing, the antidote, to current times. We need each other, now more than ever.
And, I am with you. I refuse to stew, cower, and be sad. Part of me thinks that is their goal.
I won't be broken, I will live. We are better together.
Hi Sarah- it’s Jodi, Carys wife. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this article & how well you described the state of our country right now. Hope you continue to heal from your injuries & gain new perspective as you continue to remind us what is truly important ❣️
What an excellent piece, with such good practical advice, too. I love the idea of treating running as a relationship--an idea into which a whole host of other things besides the "career" you use can be substituted. I think for me, now, I'd say I want to treat sports in general as a relationship, one that will endure for a lifetime. I also love your commitment to happiness and connection. Wise reminders in these very upsetting times.
This is a great piece Sarah. On Black Canyon, oh my goodness, the sport is really changing. So much speed! I was riveted. And as for being unexceptionable, I say no, you are an exceptional runner as if anybody who runs trail or ultra trail races for that matter. At least that’s my view anyway. I can’t wait to see as you recover and then build towards your big race.
So many good nuggets of wisdom here, Sarah. I was also watching BC100K and agree with you re the stress of sponsorship. Watching athletes align themselves with brands that allegedly dropped other (very talented) athletes with virtually no communication/feedback makes me sad, and I can only imagine the pressure to compete (not to mention "influence" as that's what seems to be the necessary requirements now). I'm so glad you are feeling better (running) and resisting the BS out there in ways that are important to you and impactful in your community. My daily work with teens keeps me focused and optimistic on days when it's hard to be, and I have some fun adventures (not races) planned this year to keep the running stoke alive and have something to look forward to. XO
Thank you Sophie, I really appreciate that. Your message boosts me after feeling dread about the news that an AP news reporter was barred from the White House because AP Style is sticking with "Gulf of Mexcio" due to its historic precedent rather than changing to "Gulf of America." Intimidation and restriction of the press is the next step toward dictatorship. I am so looking forward to you being my buddy & crew on July 11-12!!
Sarah, I read your comments about returning to running after injury this week myself. Your thinking about it as a relationship has let some very interesting thoughts surface too, about the unhealthy relationships we can have with exercise, sport, how we regard our own bodies and how we care for them or not with sport. Being in that familiar lonely place of injury and reflecting on what it can teach us has been more valuable than I ever expected and has become an informed lens through which to view and consider the practice of sport both personally and more widely. As you say and Marty KC says in these times, connection is a way forward and we all have to find our own way of connecting and you have facilitated a space here for us to do this so just wanted to say thanks.
Nice sentiments Sarah.

Thank you! I plan to share your last injury post in my next newsletter.
Nice read, Sarah. Keep fighting the good fight.
Love this Sarah! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Bob. I hear you are coming back from injury also. I hope you are feeling good running!
I’m doing well. Building back slowly, but feeling good.
